Star Citizen Game Packages explained

What is inside, package vs standalone ship, and what qualifies for the bonus.

By Domux. Updated 2026-10-03.

A Game Package is the thing you actually buy to own Star Citizen. People confuse it with standalone ships, so here is what it is, what is inside, and why it is the part that matters for the referral bonus.

Package vs standalone ship

A Game Package includes a ship plus the game licence (access to the persistent universe) and usually some starting UEC. A standalone ship is just the ship, with no game access, meant for people who already own a package. As a new player you want a Game Package, specifically a Starter Pack. The referral signup reward and the recruiter’s qualifying spending requirement are separate rules. RSI referral conditions

What is inside a Starter-tier package

  • A starter ship, like the RSI Aurora Mk II in the Citizen Starter Pack.
  • Game access to the live alpha (currently Alpha 4.10.1).
  • Some UEC to begin with (10,000 UEC in the cheapest pack), separate from and on top of the referral 50,000 UEC.
  • Basic insurance on the ship, so it is replaced if destroyed.

Insurance and CCUs, briefly

Ships come with a period of insurance that replaces them if they blow up, which is normal and nothing to stress about as a starter. A CCU (Cross Chassis Upgrade) lets you move up to a bigger ship later by paying just the price difference, so your cheap starter is never a dead end.

The smart new-player move

Buy the cheapest Game Package that qualifies, the Citizen Starter Pack at $45, attach STAR-JTV7-FXLR for the 50,000 UEC, and use in-game earnings to decide what you actually want to fly. Compare the packs here.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Star Citizen game package?

A Game Package is a ship bundled with access to the game and some starting UEC. It is what a new player buys to own Star Citizen. A Game Package provides access; the referral account reward follows the signup rules.

What is the difference between a game package and a standalone ship?

A Game Package includes game access; a standalone ship does not and is for existing owners. New players need a Game Package, ideally a Starter Pack like the Citizen Starter Pack at $45.

Which game package triggers the referral bonus?

The standard referral reward is 50,000 account UEC for a new account registered with a valid code. Game access requires a Game Package outside public trials. The separate $40 USD fresh-money spending rule determines the referrer’s Recruitment Point, not a different signup bonus. Alpha aUEC crediting can be delayed when a code is added later.

Ready to claim the 50,000 UEC?

The signup link pre-fills STAR-JTV7-FXLR. RSI advertises the bonus after buying a Game Package. The $40 fresh-money threshold determines the referrer's Recruitment Point.
