10 things to know before you buy Star Citizen

Considering your first Star Citizen package? These ten points explain what to expect, what to check before paying and how to keep the referral benefit when setting up your account.

1. You are joining an unfinished alpha

   Buy for the experience you can access now. Read what Star Citizen is if you are still deciding what the package provides. Development plans are not a delivery guarantee. Bugs and service interruptions can interrupt a session; read our buyer review and the official service status before deciding whether that suits you.

2. Check your PC before spending

   RSI requires 150+ GB on an SSD, 16 GB RAM and supported CPU/GPU features, including AVX, AVX2 and FMA3. It recommends 32 GB RAM. Minimum specs do not promise a frame rate. Compare your machine with the official requirements and our PC guide.

3. A free account is different from free game access

   You can register without buying today. Playing without a package depends on an announced public Free Fly. Check our dated trial status: a rental event for existing players does not automatically admit new accounts. If you prefer to test performance first, wait for a confirmed public window.

4. Choose a Game Package, not just a ship

   Read the product contents for Star Citizen access. A standalone hull is a different purchase. Use our package explanation and RSI’s setup checklist to check what you need before paying for a ship image you like.

5. Add the referral code while setting up the account

   The referral field belongs to registration. Use the code above before moving on to the store; buying later does not extend the code-entry window. Follow the signup steps if you are unsure where it goes.

6. A starter is a starting point, not your whole fleet

   Set a comfortable spending limit and choose a first activity. A specialist ship may need a different workflow or a crew. Our starter comparison explains the options, and the ship guides help you investigate roles before considering a larger pledge.

7. Compare the final price, not an old sale headline

   Our starter guide keeps regular prices and offers beside their source dates. Confirm availability, currency and tax in the official store. The referral benefit does not lower the checkout total, so evaluate the package on its own price and contents.

8. Alpha money and release currency differ

   Alpha play uses temporary aUEC. If a patch starts a fresh wallet, RSI adds its testing allowance and account UEC outside a Game Package; package UEC is excluded. Alpha earnings and losses do not change release UEC. Read RSI’s currency rules or our balance guide rather than expecting a fixed wallet total.

9. Squadron 42 is a separate game

   Decide whether you want the online universe or the single-player campaign. Read the actual entitlements rather than assuming a Star Citizen starter includes both. Our Squadron 42 guide covers the separate product. This code promises no campaign discount or equipment.

10. Know your next steps and refund terms

    After purchase, use the official launcher instructions and first-session guide. Keep the order confirmation. RSI’s refund policy requires a support request within 30 days and has exclusions, including merchandise and items no longer on your account. Reclaiming for store credit is different from a cash refund.
